After yesterday's election the Republicans will soon be in control of the Presidency, the US Senate, the US House, around 34 Governorships, and the majority of State Legislatures. The Republican party is about to become the most dominant American political party in decades, despite having only won the popular vote for President once this century.
Being an Oregon Republican I spend a lot of time talking about the dangers of One Party Rule, but we now find ourselves in a position where One Party Rule is exactly what we have on the national level. After years spent in entrenched opposition to President Obama and the Democratic Party the responsibility now falls on us to govern.
It is on us to put forward big ideas and specific plans to help the American people. To actually limit government as we promised instead of exploding spending as members of both parties have done in the past. There are good conservative solutions to many of the issues our country faces, but we have to go beyond conservative talking points and throwing red meat to the base. We now have to crack some books and sit down with people to draft up some solutions.
I have never been a Trump supporter. His brand of politics does not align with what I want the Republican Party to be. But he is my President now, and I hope that he does a good job. Now it is the responsibility of all Republicans to hold our elected officials accountable, even when they are on our 'team". So it is on us to stand up to President Trump when he is wrong and goes too far, but it is also on us to support him when he is right and it is in the best interest of the nation. As the new ruling party we can choose to thumb our nose at the Democrats and pass legislation strictly on party lines, or we can learn from the mistakes of such partisan actions, and remember that the Democrats in congress represent real Americans whose voices need to be heard.
I firmly believe that Trump was successful in winning the Presidency because for too long Democratic and Republican politicians as well as members of the media outright dismissed wide swaths of the American population who were dealing with real issues. As a result those people fed up with the establishment gave a giant middle finger to the political class in the form of a human Molotov cocktail, Donald Trump. Should the Republicans currently in control of congress similarly dismiss wide swaths of the country, don't be surprised if we see a similar uprising in four years.
Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Jack Kemp once said "Our goal is not just to win, but to be worthy of winning." By every metric the Republican Party has won. Now it is time for us to prove our worth.
